Types of AI

Definition

The classification of AI systems based on their capabilities, typically categorized as Narrow AI (Weak), General AI (Strong), and Superintelligent AI.

Explain Like I'm New

We categorize AI by how smart it is compared to humans. Right now, we only have Narrow AI (good at one specific task). General AI would be exactly as smart as a human at everything. Superintelligent AI would be vastly smarter than the smartest human.

Real World Example

Narrow AI: AlphaGo (it can beat the world champion at the board game Go, but it doesn't know how to tie its shoes or make a cup of coffee). General AI: C-3PO from Star Wars.

Common Use Cases

  • •Understanding technological limits
  • •AI safety discussions

Answer

No. As of today, all existing AI systems, including powerful models like GPT-4, are strictly classified as 'Narrow AI' because they lack true generalized human reasoning and consciousness.

Answer

A hypothetical future point where an AI becomes vastly smarter than the best human brains in practically every field, including scientific creativity, general wisdom, and social skills.
